RAJSHAHI, Sept 9: The molasses producers of the district are incurring losses as the prices of the same have decreased in the local market.
At present, fresh molasses (gur) are being sold at only Tk 18 to 20 per kg while the last year's stocked molasses are being sold at Tk 10 per kg only.
The molasses stockists are incurring huge losses due to such price decrease. According to sources, a huge quantity of liquid molasses were stored in drums last year in Charghat Upazila.
A drum containing about 280 kg of molasses was being sold between Tk 10,000 and 12,000 last year. At present it is being sold between Tk 3,000 and Tk 4,000.
Though it is prohibited to produce molasses in sugar mill areas, the sugarcane farmers are producing it for making an extra profit.
When asked Manwar, a molasses producer, told the FE that last year he had stored 25 drums of molasses and this year would lose about Tk 2,000 per drum.
The local traders told the FE that the prices of molasses decreased as the prices of sugar decreased in the market. Sugar was now being sold between Tk 27 and Tk 28 per kg in the open market.
