Money Hasina got is extortion, not donation: Mashhud

Thursday, 6 September 2007

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury Wednesday said he thinks the money allegedly received by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina for which the ACC filed a case against her was extortion, not donation, reports UNB.
"The people of Bangladesh do not agree to donate Tk 30 million-50 million (3 or 5 crore). So, the probability to get a deal through this is greater. We're finding out that. This is now in court. If it's proved in the court, we'll be able to say whether it was a donation or not," he told reporters after addressing a roundtable.
The roundtable, titled 'Anti-Corruption Drive and the Way Forward', was organised by Bangladesh Enterprise Institute at its conference room in the city.
"At this moment, I think, since we've inquired the matter, we've enough reasons to believe that some other interest was involved in that. Therefore, we're not considering this as a donation. It'll be better to call it extortion."
