Monga problem to be solved by cultivating new variety Aman

Tuesday, 3 July 2007

It is envisaged that cultivation of a new hybrid variety of Aman paddy developed by local scientists will help to thwart monga in the greater Rangpur district. The new variety--aman BRRI33--could be harvested between the Bangla months of Ashwin and Kartik when the traditional aman are in the budding stage. This hybrid aman would serve as food security of the agricultural workers and hardcore poor people of the region and also provide employment opportunity.
Sources said the farmers could face monga, a famine-like situation by cultivation of this new variety aman paddy in the region. Farm workers are usually unemployed during monga in the five districts of greater Rangpur. After harvesting the IRRI33 the farmers will get enough time to cultivate pre-winter vegetable like potato, robi crops, mug pulse and maize during monga season. FAF comprising 13 government and non government organisations has been implementing a project to motivate the farmers for cultivating BRRI33 in the region.
Sources said farmers of all 6 upazilas of Nilphamari district are preparing their land to cultivate this variety of paddy.
