Monga stays out of Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Nov 4: Monga did not break out in Nilphamari district this year due to different projects undertaken by different government, semi government and non government organisations in the region.
Sources said projects like 40 days job creation project, OMS of rice at subsidised price, VGF, VGD, Test relief, senior citizens allowance, allowance for destitute widows, assistance for fully retarded persons an so on have contributed greatly in this regard. Under the 40 days employment generation scheme, 18,464 ultra poor people are working Tk 150 per day each in the construction and re-construction of village roads, approach roads of bridges and culverts, earth filling of different academic institutions, excavation and re-excavation of derelict ponds and canals, making of organic fertilisers.
Meanwhile, cultivation of short duration anti monga paddies like BINA7, BRRI33 and others is also contributing greatly in eradicating famine. Harvesting of these varieties of paddy has been started earlier in the last month and thousands of farm labourers were employed there.
