KHULNA, Jan 07: The country's second marine port in Mongla remained virtually idle for the last one week with no cargo ship anchoring at the problem-ridden port, officials here said today.
"Even till January 07 there is no schedule for any ship at the port," an official concerned said, stressing that if the situation continued, there would be a paralysing impact on export and import activities through this seaport.
On January 2, port sources said, Kota Tagap left the port after downloading goods and since then no ship anchored at the port.
Several thousand port workers employed on ''no-work no-pay'' basis and their families have been facing financial hardship and uncertainties in absence of any loading and unloading work at the port having no movement of ships.
Work in nearby local industries and shrimp-processing units also remained almost idle as a result of non-arrival of any cargo ship.
Meanwhile, a high official of the port told The Financial Express, "we have taken steps to increase the number of ships touching the port in coming days."
