Mongla port to be brought under automation

KHULNA, May 16: The problem of navigability will be removed for the development of Mongla port, increase containers for export, modern equipment for container handling and the port will be brought under automation system soon, said the Shipping Minister Shahajan Khan while he was presiding at the 3rd meeting of Mongla Port advisory committee held at Khulna Circuit House Sunday. The minister said that special incentives will be offered to inspire the businesspersons for using Mongla Port to export and import of jute, jute goods and frozen foods. He said that at present the main problem of the port is the crisis of containers. The meeting decided that special Roro ferry of BIWTC will be arranged at Dhaka-Mawa ferry ghat for carrying BJME goods, Customs Head Office shifted at Mongla, re-tender called for capital dredging at port channel within a week, new weighing scale to be set up at port jetty, lifting of eight sunken ships at the port through auction. Initiative will taken to set up new industries at Mongla EPZ, separate port thana and 40% government imported food grain unloaded through Mongla Port. Besides, the meeting also discussed about the construction of oil depot of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, construction of food silo, gas supply through pipeline and overall modernisation of Mongla port. Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Central leader and District Awami league president Harun-or-Rashid, Lawmaker Habibun Nahar, MPA Chairman Commodore MAK Azad, Divisional Commissioner, DIG Khulna range and members of the advisory committee were present in the meeting. Help for poultry farmers Another report adds: The government has taken an initiative to rehabilitate bird flu affected poultry farmers. As part of this programme Tk. 0.4 million is being distributed in Khulna among 82 farmers by the Livestock Department. Khulna Metro Livestock Department source said that thousands of bird flu affected poultry birds were destroyed and 145 farmers were affected. For this reason, the present government has taken an initiative to rehabilitate the farmers under a project entitled "Evian influenza comeback support service". Under the project a seven member committee headed by Deputy Commissioner was formed to identify the victims. Indian goods seized Another report says : Khulna RAB-6 recovered a huge quantity of Indian sarees, three-pieces and long cloth worth about Tk 5 million from two courier service offices of the city Saturday evening. RAB-6 Khulna office source said that on secret information they raided at Sundarban Courier office at Shibbari square and recovered seven bundles of valuable Indian sarees and then conducted a drive at Continental Courier Service office at Picture Place square area of the city Saturday evening and recovered valuable goods worth about Tk 5 million. It may be mentioned that, on May-4 BGB members recovered Indian sarees worth about Tk 40 million from ferry ghat area of Batiaghata Upazila of the district. Pubali Bank managers' confce held Another report adds: Managers' conference of Pubali Bank of Khulna region was held here at a local hotel Saturday. Ahmed Shafi Chowdhury, director of the bank addressed as the chief guest. The function was presided over by Managing Director Helal Ahmed Chowdhury. The conference was attended among others by Deputy Managing Director Shafiul Alam Khan Chowdhury, Khulna regional head and DGM Jibon Krishna Biswas and other 24 managers from Khulna region were present in the conference. Managing Director Helal Ahmed Chowdhury said that all the branches of Khulna will be brought under online banking within this year and Pubali Bank will start mobile and internet banking soon.
