Monsoon rain paralyses city life

Wednesday, 2 July 2008

Torrents of monsoon rain Tuesday flooded city thoroughfares, as poor drainage system in the capital failed to drain away the rainwater, inflicting immense sufferings on civic life, reports UNB.

Inundating streets, rainwater flowed over pavements into shops and marketplaces in many areas. Unprecedented traffic jams for hours together on different routes only accentuated the public plight further.

Engines of many vehicles, including private cars and CNG-run auto-rickshaws, went out of order on the flooded streets, aggravating the traffic congestion.

City-dwellers, particularly school-children and office-goers, had to face immense difficulties. "People were to attend their workplaces wading through knee-deep water," said an eyewitness account of the disarray.

The worst affected places include Malibagh-Mouchak area, Shantinagar, Rajarbagh, Motijeel, Fakirerpul, Arambagh, Shajahanpur, Dhanmondi Road 27, Manipuripara and Agargaon.

"Under the influence of moderate to strong monsoon over the north Bay and active monsoon over Bangladesh, heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at many places during the next 24-hours to 6pm today (Wednesday)," a Met official said. However, the Met forecast said light to moderate rain might continue all over the country until July 4 due to active monsoon during the rainy season.

Met office Tuesday recorded 68-mm rainfall in the capital, while the highest 104-mm was recorded in Kutubdia, and 73-mm in Maizdee Court during a period from 6am to 12pm.
