SEATTLE, Mar 20 (AFP): Fredy Montero had two goals and an assist as the expansion Seattle Sounders won their inaugural Major League Soccer game, blanking the New York Red Bulls 3-0 Thursday.
Brad Evans also scored in the first half on a spinning left-footed shot that split the legs of New York goalkeeper Danny Cepero in front of a sold out crowd of 32,523 at Qwest Field.
Sanna Nyassi will get credit for the first shot in Sounders (1-0-0) history in the opening moments, but it was Montero beating Cepero barely 10 minutes into franchise history that provided the fireworks.
Nate Jaqua carried near the edge of the penalty box before dropping back to Osvaldo Alonso. Sebastien Le Toux was next to get a touch, finding Montero unmarked. Montero drilled a right-footed shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Montero then added the capper to his sterling debut in the 75th minute, picking New York defender Mike Petke in the open field and then faking out Cepero for his second score.
