Month-long Asian art show begins in city today

Curtain will be raised on the '13th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh'- an international exhibition of visual art from different regions of the world in the capital city today (Tuesday).
Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the event at the Osmani Memorial Hall at 4 pm in the afternoon.
"This is the most prestigious of all international galas of visual art hosted by Bangladesh," Advisor to the Ministry of Culture Rasheda K Chowdhury said at a press conference held on the eve of the event at the Shilpakala Academy yesterday.
Secretary to the Ministry of Culture Sharful Alam and Director General of Shilpakala Academy Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam were also present in the occasion.
A total of 213 artworks of 102 artists from 23 countries of Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific region will be initially exhibited in the international gala now reaching the 27th year since its inception.
Apart from that, a total of 234 artworks of 198 artists from Bangladesh will also find their place in the exhibition.
Also featured in the gala will be 16 paintworks of invited artists from abroad.
The month long exhibition will be hosted at three different venues in the city: Osmani Memorial Hall, Shilpakala Academy and the National Museum.
The three best artworks of the exhibition selected by the 5-member jury board will receive a grand prize of Tk 1,00,000 each.
Apart from that, 7 other artworks nominated by the jury will receive honorary prizes.
The exhibition will be open to all from 11 am in the morning to 7 pm in the evening on weekdays and Saturdays and from 3 pm in the afternoon to 8 pm in the evening on Fridays. The event will last till November 19.
As part of the exhibition, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will also organize a two-day international seminar on October 22 and 23. The theme of the seminar this year is 'Experiment in New Media in Recent Years'.
A cultural evening will also be held in the honour of the participating artists at the Jatiya Natyashala on October 21.
Bangladesh has been hosting the biennial aimed at showcasing the artistic heritage and contemporary art in Asia and kindred regions since 1981. A total of 32 countries participated in the gala held the last time in 2006.
