Moral education needed in daily school lesson

Sunday, 23 October 2011

Chowdhury Md. Usman Ahmmady It was just a few years ago when a professor Rabiul Hasan (pseudonym), considered to be a very talented and popular teacher in his own department in a public university, involved himself in a cheating scandal by misappropriating a privilege for teachers. A receipt that he submitted showed that he spent 75 thousand taka for an air conditioner for own recreation whereas he originally spent 35 thousand taka for it. Later the internal investigation of a complaint against him by the university authority found the allegation proved. Except a show cause letter, no action had been taken against the intelligentsia for the misappropriation of government money by adopting fraudulent means. He was backed up by his authority. The main reason for corruption in our country is that it is supported by the elite class who are assumed to be the most corrupt people of our country. Intelligentsia refers to those people who are educated and intellectual. They are thought to be the role model of the common people. If they are corrupted, then who would replace them? Corruption is a universal disease. It is everywhere. Everyone faces it. Some are for it and some are against it. Some receive, some are deceived. Some are more corrupted and some are less. Our country is extremely corruption-prone. It has repeatedly ranked first in corruption. Thus corruption has become a cancer of the society at present. The corruption cancer spreads throughout the country like a wild-fire contagion as it exists at the top levels of the society. Who doesn't commit crime among the heads of the country? Doctors? No. They are highly accused of killing diseased people while misconducting their operations. Now-a-days, they are busy in selling kidneys. Moreover, 52 drug companies are given red alert of late by the Directorate of Drug Administration for their poor quality of medicines. In delivery case, doctors prefer cesarean delivery for extra income. Sorry to say, only few doctors give treatments to poor patients for free. Judges? No. Their decisions are motivated, especially in political cases as they are selected by the ruling party. The ugly secret of judicial corruption was brought out to us, when we see Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a corruption charge against Justice Fazlul Haque. He was accused of illegally amassing huge wealth and concealing information about his assets. Former Chief Justice Khairul Haq was also accused of taking a million taka bribe from the ruling party government. Politicians? No. Ultimate power always corrupts. So in Bangladesh, politicians are more or less corrupted. Their corruption motive is manifested when they deliberately use their power by arresting those opposition leaders who, they think, might shout much at their corruption and threat to their political gains. Most of the ruling-party politicians think that Bangladesh is a delicious cake. They just go after their pieces until their tenure ends without doing much for the people's pain alleviation. Business persons? No. They do their job half way lingering their stipulated time for extra benefit. Say for example, in road and high ways, we see our roads are easily broken. They are easily broken only because the contractor will get more money from the government doing it second time and then for third time. Recently World Bank has already stopped their fund grant for Padma Bridge Project due to a corruption allegation against our minister. Ministers? No. Though they are selected to serve the people. Many of them are blamed to be misusing power through taking corrupted means like bribery, extortion, influencing governmental organisations, nepotism, favouritism, embezzlement, fraud and so on. Bureaucrats? No. They always make delay at any kind of service only money can speed them up. They think they are above the law. So they never show accountability. They get the patronization of the corrupt politicians and greedy business men. So all these matters make them stand high among the corrupted intelligentsia discussed above. Police? No. They are considered to be the useless weapon for the safety of the poor, who-don't-have-money. They are always compromised at any level of situation. Common people have little faith in Police. And RAB, an elite class police force, getting the license to kill anyone loves to kill people like they are in a picnic shooting at birds. Life is so cheap now and people are just fish out of water. Educationists? No. Education was once considered to be the noblest cause of society. But the scenario has changed immensely. Now teachers are found to be coaching business oriented, not classroom oriented. Few of them now even behave rapacious; resulting in menacing disgrace to the profession. Porimal Joydhor is a typical example of such heinous work as he disgraced the noble profession by raping his own private student. Once knowing the corruption of his relief minister Gazi Golam Mustofa of just-liberated Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman rightly said, "Devils, I am looking for my blanket. Where is it? But he couldn't fulfill his dream due to the corrupted people around him. Fish rots from the heads first. In the same manner, a society rots from its corrupted intelligentsia. The little but highly populous country, Bangladesh is affected highly due to such social cancer where most of the people are still poor. Many said that moral degradation, tendency to making money, and unhappiness to nano-achievements are responsible for corruption among intelligentsia in Bangladesh. The giant corruption is engulfing our society due to the weak religious and moral teaching. How can we defend the power of evil, if the value of society is based on wealth accumulating and little thought is given to moral and religious teaching? Thus today there is no alternative to imparting of moral and spiritual education in daily lesson based school curriculum. We hope that following the way we can make our young people strong, brave, courageous and valiant enough to fight the unending list of evils because they are the intelligentsia of tomorrow.
