More CC cameras to prevent abduction
Thursday, 1 May 2014
The government has decided to install closed-circuit (CC) cameras at all important intersections in cities across Bangladesh to prevent abductions. The decision came amid widespread criticism over a spate of abductions over the past few months. Among the abductees killed by their captors, the bodies of seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation’s panel mayor Nazrul Islam, some Chhatra league and Jubo League leaders and a senior lawyer, were recovered from Shitalakkha and Dhaleshwari rivers from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday morning. Besides, the businessman husband of environmental lawyer Syeda Rizwana Hasan was found alive one day after his abduction, but most of the other people abducted by unidentified criminals either remained missing or were killed by the abductors. State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal revealed the government plan to install CC cameras on Wednesday afternoon, a few hours before the bodies of seven people were found in Narayanganj. He said there are CC cameras in some streets. But the government has decided to install more to prevent crimes including abductions. He said the government was also planning to soon install such cameras on multi-storied buildings, besides important intersections, according to a news agency.
