NARSINGDI, May 19 (BSS): Farmers of the district have cultivated jute on 20 percent more land this time than the previous year.
DAE sources said the farmers during the last couple of years lost their interest in jute cultivation as they did not get fair prices of their produces.
During the last two and three years they got fair prices of jute and as a result the farmers are now inspired to cultivate more jute.
Deputy Director of Department Agriculture Extension (DAD) Abu Naser Sidique told the news agency that some 6176 hectares land have been brought under jute cultivation in six Upazilas of the district in the current season while the figure was 5100 hectares in the previous year and 4800 hectares in 2009.
The DAE official said if the favorable climate condition is prevailed about 61372 bales of jute are expected to be produced in the district.
The farmers are hopeful that the prevailing climatic condition would help achieving a bumper production of jute this year.
