Expressing sorrow at the loss of lives and property caused by cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh, Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh conveyed India's readiness to assist the neighbouring country in relief process.
Singh, in a letter to Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, has expressed heartfelt condolences of his government and the people of India over the natural calamity that killed nearly 2,000 people in Bangladesh, according to a message received in Dhaka Sunday, reports UNB.
He expressed "great sadness at the loss of lives and damage to property in Bangladesh caused by the hurricane", External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said Saturday night.
"In his message, the Prime Minister also said India stands ready to assist, in whatever way it can, to help in the relief process," Sarna mentioned.
Meanwhile, French Minister of Foreign and European Affairs M Bernard Kouchner expressed his heartfelt condolences to the government and the people of Bangladesh following the Sidr cyclone that slammed into the country.
In a message, Kouchner salutes the outstanding mobilisation of the Bangladeshi authorities that allowed the evacuation of a majority of persons at risk, thus minimising human losses that could have been much heavier.
He expressed his sympathy to the relatives and friends of victims and his solidarity to the Bangladesh government.
