More than nine persons seek AL nomination for each seat

More than nine persons collected Awami League (AL) nomination forms for each parliamentary seat over the last four days till Saturday to participate in the upcoming general election scheduled to be held on December 18, reports BSS.
A total of 2,758 nomination papers were sold for six divisions-Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal-from the party's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the city since November 5, party sources said.
Of the total, the highest 1,301 nomination forms were sold for 95 seats in Dhaka division, 452 for 72 seats in Rajshahi division, 443 for 57 seats in Chittagong division, 95 for 19 seats in Sylhet division, 261 for 36 seats in Khulna division and 206 nomination forms for 21 seats in Barisal division.
The sources said that the party collected a total of Tk 2,06,85,000 by selling the nomination forms during the period, the sources said.
Four nomination papers for the parliamentary seats of Gopalganj 3, Rangpur 6, Narail 1 and Barisal 1 were collected on behalf of AL President Sheikh Hasina.
Mirza Golam Ifran Babu, son of former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad late Mirza Golam Hafiz, collected his nomination paper for Panchagar 1 constituency.
He joined the AL recently reposing his total confidence in the leadership of party chief Sheikh Hasina and expressing solidarity with its principles and ideals.
Distribution of the party's nomination forms, each costing Tk 7,500, ended today, the sources said.
UNB from Comilla adds: Awami League nomination aspirant and former FBCCI president Yusuf Abdullah Harun was among 10 people injured in an attack by his rival group at Companiganj in Muradngar Uapzila Saturday.
It was alleged that Muradnagar AL secretary Jahangir Alam Sarkar, also aspirant for party ticket for the upcoming election, launched the attack at the extended meeting of AL upazila committee.
Harun later at a press conference blamed Sarkar for the attack and demanded punishment for the troublemakers.
Meanwhile, at least 40 people were injured as supporters of two rival AL prospective candidates for the ensuing election clashed at Baufal in Patuakhali district Saturday.
Badly wounded Khokan Chowkidar was rushed to Barisal Medical College Hospital while 17 others were undergoing treatment in Baufal health complex.
Witnesses said supporters of ASM Firoze, former MP, and ASM Firoze Alam clashed with bamboo sticks and sharp weapons leaving 40 activists on both sides injured at about noon. Baufal thana officer-in-charge Zakir Hossain and three constables were also wounded in their attempt to stop the fighting.
The clash began when the Baufal upazila AL committee, coordinated by the district committee, meeting for scrutiny of party candidates for Patuakhali-2 constituency. The disturbance outside has not affected the meeting, said the upazila leaders.
