More time sought for Pinak-6 probe

The committee set up by the Shipping Ministry to investigate the Pinak-6’s sinking in Padma River in Munshiganj, says more time is needed to complete the probe. The report was to have been submitted on Monday, Joint Secretary Nur-ur-Rahman, head of the committee, informed today, saying more time is needed for a proper investigation. ‘All the members have agreed on this, so we still request an extension of 7 to 10 days,’ he added. The Shipping Ministry formed the high-level probe body with 7 members after overloaded Pinak-6 launch, with more than 300 passengers, cpsized near Mawa Turning Point at Lauhajang Upazila in Munshiganj district on Aug 4. Rahman said they have heard 25 testimonies including 13 by witnesses. ‘They said the launch overturned because it was carrying too many passengers. The affected families have told us about how they are suffering the loss of loved ones and pleaded that no more lives be ever lost in such incidents.’ The committee’s report will ascertain the cause of the mishap, the role of the management and technical flaws while it makes its recommendations, he said, according to bdnews24.com.
