More tribunals if needed: Quamrul

Saturday, 30 October 2010

State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam has said that the government will increase the number of war crimes tribunals and members of the investigation agency, if needed, in a bid to expedite the procedure of the war crimes trials, reports bdnews24.com.
He also said that all war criminals of the country would be tried.
Mr Quamrul was speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club in the city Friday.
The state minister made his comment just the day after National Human Rights Commission Chairman Mizanur Rahman had said that the war crimes trial was plagued by lethargy.
"We thought it (war crimes trial) would run at a speed of 100-km per hour. But now we see it is not running at all. Only one tribunal has been formed but that does not even crawl. It stirs sometimes. When will it start walking then?" Mr Rahman questioned.
In March this year, the government initiated the trial process for those who committed crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971.
It formed a tribunal, a prosecution panel and an investigation agency and also conducted investigations of allegations against former Jama'at-e-Islami kingpin Ghulam Azam, executive council member Delwar Hossain Sayedee and BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury.
