Morkel, Steyn spark S Africa
Friday, 11 July 2008
Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel found their Lord's legs to turn around the opening day of the series following a wicketless morning session. Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss pushed England to 114 without loss before three wickets tumbled in 13 balls.
The middle victim was Michael Vaughan, cleaned up by a Steyn classic for 2, but Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell resisted the pace during an enthralling session, reports Cricinfo.
Shortly after lunch Cook and Strauss registered their second century opening stand of the season. With Paul Harris in operation, Graeme Smith was starting to sweat over his decision to bowl.
In little more than two overs everything changed. Strauss had barely put a foot wrong, leaving well and driving with increasing authority, and was unlucky to be given out lbw to Morkel.
Replays showed the ball pitched outside leg, but it was the spark South Africa needed.
England 223 for 3 (Pietersen 54*, Bell 44*) v South Africa at 10:00 pm.
