Friday, 12 March 2010

Prof. Muhammad Mahboob Ali
Dr. M Mosharraf Hossain, the management guru of Bangladesh, spent his professional life developing human skill. Rapport Bangladesh Limited, Bangladesh's first ever management institution, he ovated 37 years ago, has been providing management training with the motto of producing quality managers. Immediately after liberation, it needed vision, courage and determination to embark of the uncharted area of management consultancy and training.
Born on February 15, 1945, he set sail on 'perilous seas' 37 years ago, when I was still a school student.
By choosing management consultancy and training for a professional career he showed vision and tenacity to achieve an ambitious mission. He never lacked in courage and determination to overcome adversities single handed. Everyone knows today that he forged ahead braving many an odd. The elevated seat he achieved for himself through hard work. What is the secret of his success?
A talented individual and a gem of a person he devoted himself to developing human skill in management. He built and developed a management institution. Rapport Bangladesh Limited is now reckoned as a prestigious institution for management consultancy and training. Mosharraf would be remembered for long as the builder of Rapport, known for its wonderful system of management. Its office, though small, is beautiful and simple. Pictures on the walls acquaint visitors with its activities past and present.
Mosharraf's motto is quality management. He has shown that it is possible to develop skill under private initiative. Work culture, team work, brain storming and communication skill are areas of stress. It was indeed an uphill task in a war-ravaged economy to go for management training. But an advantage was that trained managers were scarce. He has been working relentlessly with his motto.
An adept trainer himself, Mosharraf presents innovative ideas to motivate the individual trainers to perform better. He introduced "Management Excellence Award" for the first time in Bangladesh. It created lot of enthusiasm among the trainees.
I had the good for ==== of getting acquainted with him in 1989. Gradually I was able to come close to this personality, ever green, youthful and charming. Now I am one of his closest associates. It provides me the opportunity to enrich my own knowledge and skills in management.
A prolific writer, he values new ideas. He is keen that the trainees learn management. According to Ken Afful "the expected outcome of the action research process includes implementation of a new organisation structure, development of HR policy incorporating job descriptions, training and development performance, appraisal system and staff guidelines …..etc."
Mosharraf Hossain is the "Management Guru" of Bangladesh. One has to attend his presentations at breakfast meeting do know his versatility. He created a culture of free exchange of ideas to benefit the participants.
A look at the challenging problems of the country would instantly remind a trainee what Mosharraf told the Guardian in an interview, "Management inefficiency is being referred by everybody including the head of the government, head of the state, opposition political leaders and everyone who genuinely feel for the nation, but unfortunately nothing positive has been done to improve management".
He is a devoted social worker. A Rotarian, he thinks that social development acquires corporate social responsibility.
He is always on his toes to work out effective management strategies.
He enrolled me as a faculty member of Rapport training programmes in 1989. I am thankful to them for giving me the award of the best trainer. I also received the 9th Rapport award for excellence in human resource development-2009.
Mosharraf is a noble, affable human being with may enviable qualities of head and heart. In the field of management I consider him as the Peter Drucker of Bangladesh.
Mosharraf stands out for training the unemployed in Bangladesh. His innovative 'executive search' programme has proved to be a very strong platform for the job seekers. In the process, he acts as a veritable bridge between the prospective employer and the employee. He would go out his way to provide the poor but deserving job seekers.
Mosharraf provided rare opportunities to Rapport personnel meet many luminaries in the world of management.
To me he has been a light house in the rough sea. there could be no management and training in Bangladesh without Mosharraf Hossain. On his 65th birth anniversary I would offer him my warmest felicitation. I hope the Almighty would grant him long life so that he could continue to serve the nation.
I would quote, P B Shelley's following lines to describe Mosharraf:
" Better than all measure of delightful sound
Better that all treasures
That in books are found
Thy skill to poet were, thou scorner of the ground !
Teach me half the gladness
That thy brain must know,
Such harmonious madness
From lips would flow
The world should listen then
As I am listening now."
