CHITTAGONG, May 29: Most of the local Awami League leaders and MPs are yet to join hands with the party-backed mayoral candidate Mohiuddin Chowdhury as the election campaign got momentum Friday afternoon.
However, on the second day of his election campaign Mohiuddin has got beside him a long-time opponent within the party, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury MP, president of Chittagong south district Awami League and chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on jute and textile ministry.
Akhtaruzzaman MP today joined the campaign with Mohiuddin in a number of city areas. He said that the AL has taken the mayoral election as a challenge and all the leaders and workers of the party should stand united to come out victorious.
He, however, warned Mohiuddin Chowdhury not to undermine the three-time elected ward councillor Manjur Alam, for whom the BNP leaders are up and doing and have already launched all-out campaign.
On the other hand the BNP-backed major mayoral contender M Manjur Alam came down heavily with the campaign through expression of his all-out financial support to observe the death anniversary of late president Ziaur Rahman.
"This time the death anniversary of President Zia will be observed tomorrow in a more befitting manner unlike in the past. I will bear all expenses of the 'Mezban' (feast of the common people) arranged in all the 11 thanas in the metropolis," Manju said.
But other rebel leaders and parliament members of the local ruling AL have remained away from the campaign. MA Latif MP was back in the city from abroad two days back. Another MP Nurul Islam, also of city AL, is unlikely to return from abroad before election on June 17.
President of Chittagong north district AL engineer Mosharaf Hussain MP, secretary of the unit MA Salam, Moinuddin Ahmed Khan Badal MP, AZM Nasir Uddin among other influential leaders, are yet to join hands with Mohiuddin.
Meanwhile, Mohiuddin's son barrister Mohibul Hasan Nawfel has started door-to-door campaigning and seeking support for his father. He urged the people to send their advice and suggestions through the websites. The websites are: www.mohiuddinchy.com and www.nagorikcommittee.org.
