Most of the commercial banks will finalise the list of loan defaulters, who are probable candidates for the upcoming parliament and upazila elections, after November 20.
"We've almost updated information about default loans," Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Agrani Bank Limited Syed Abu Naser Bukhtear Ahmed told the FE Tuesday.
He also said the list of defaulters will be finalised after submission of the nomination papers by the aspirant candidates.
The new deadline for filing nomination papers for both the elections is now November 20 instead of November 13.
Meanwhile, Sonali Bank Limited has asked all its divisional, regional and corporate branches across the country to submit the names of the aspirants by November 21 to the headquarters for finalising the list of loan defaulters.
Under the amended Representation of Peoples Order (RPO), any person willing to contest the elections requires payment of his or her default loan and utility bills seven days before the submission of nomination paper.
"We're now taking preparation to lodge complaints with the election officials concerned about loan defaulters filling nomination papers for upcoming elections," a senior official of the Sonali Bank Limited told the FE.
Meanwhile, the council of advisers of the caretaker government has given approval to the amendments of the RPO, reducing the timeframe for clearing bank loans and outstanding utility bills by aspiring candidates from the existing 15 days to seven days for the submission of nominations papers.
The Election Commission (EC) earlier asked the commercial banks and NBFIs to update their information about the loan defaulters, who might be candidates for the coming elections.
As part of the move, the EC has sent a list of elected MPs from 1973 to 2001 to them (banks and NBFIs) to prepare a list of possible loan-defaulters who are likely to be candidates for the next parliament and upazila elections.
