Most buildings in city won't withstand tremor of over 6.5

Food and Disaster Management Secretary Md Mokhlesur Rahman said most of the buildings in the capital would not withstand any earthquake with magnitude of over 6.5 in the Richter scale, reports UNB.
"People are not following the building codes. Most of the buildings in the city, especially made by the developers, won't tolerate any earthquake with magnitude of 6.5-7.5 (in Richter scale)," he said quoting a survey conducted by the Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP).
The Secretary said this while addressing the inaugural session of the 'Three-day National Workshop on Training Course on Preliminary Aids and Relief for Disaster Prone Region' at the city's BANBEIS Bhaban Monday.
The workshop was organisd by Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU) in cooperation with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) Regional Office in Tehran.
BNCU secretary Abdul Khaleque gave the welcome address.
Disaster Management Bureau (DMB) Director General Md Farhad Uddin and Mehdi Ahmed Rajavi of ISESCO also spoke on the occasion. Food and Disaster Management secretary informed the workshop that the government is spending around Tk 700 million this fiscal year to procure equipment for rescue operations in case of earthquake.
Besides, he said, the government would also impart disaster preparedness training to some 62,000 volunteers in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet in three years. Already 1,000 volunteers have been imparted training.
