Most factories pay wages, allowances

IP officials say

FE REPORT | Friday, 8 July 2022

Majority of the factories under the jurisdiction of the Industrial Police (IP) paid festival allowances and monthly wages to their workers by Thursday, the government-set deadline to do the same.
A total of 8,995 units, including textile, ready-made garment (RMG), jute mills, factories under BEPZA, and non-RMG units - located in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Khulna, Sylhet and Cumilla - are under IP jurisdiction.
According to IP officials, about 84.34 per cent of the factories paid festival allowances, while the rate of wage payment for June was 56.56 per cent until 5:00 pm on Thursday.
The percentage would go up, as many units were giving payments at night, they added.
On July 03, the government instructed factory owners of all sectors, including RMG, to pay wages and festival allowances to workers by July 07 before the Eid-ul-Azha holiday.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) claimed that 100 per cent (of their member) factories gave festival allowances and June wages to their workers.
Talking to the FE, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said the Eid holiday was declared for all the factories. Majority of those announced holiday for eight days, while some others for 10 days.
