Most foreigen missions fail in export earning target

Shah Alam Nur Most of Bangladesh's diplomatic missions and commercial wings in foreign countries have failed to achieve their export earning targets, According to the mission wise export target and performance report during July-October period of current fiscal (2011-12), among 44 diplomatic missions, only 23 achieved their export targets while the rest 21 failed to meet their targets. The overall export earnings for the four-month period totaled US$ 6163.73 million, an increase of 22.56 per cent over the corresponding period of last fiscal, but 1.61 per cent lower than the strategic target of $ 6264.60 million. "It has been noticed that Bangladesh missions have mainly failed to perform properly in those countries, which are considered as comparatively bigger markets for Bangladeshi products. Failure to achieve export targets in these countries reflects our diplomatic failure in terms of promoting global business," President of Exporters Association of Bangladesh (EAB) Abdus Salam Murshedy told the FE. However, missions in Berlin, London, Rome, Tokyo, Beijing, Doha, Stockholm, Colombo, Brussels, Muscat, Singapore, Madrid, Seoul, Brunei, Pretoria, Nairobi, Dubai, Tashkent, Thimpu, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Moscow and Manama achieved their export targets. Last three month (2011-12) fiscal of the 21 missions that could not achieve their targets, but exports still marked a rise for 11 of them over the corresponding period. These missions are in Washington, Paris, New Delhi, The Hague, Amman, Bangkok, Kathmandu, Islamabad, Ankara, Hanoi, Rabat, Riyadh, Ottawa, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Tripoli, Tehran, Canberra, Jakarta, Cairo and Yanggoon.
