Sunday, 4 December 2011

DU Correspondent Most of the departmental heads of Dhaka University (DU) are not in favor of taking examinations during hartal (general strike) considering sufferings of students and teachers as public transportation becomes almost paralysed. Chairman of the Botany department of DU Prof Dr Abdul Aziz said that the university authorities shouldn't take examinations during general strike as not all the examiners and examinees are fully residential and they feel insecured to go out of their houses, he added. "As a chairman of the department, I will never take responsibilities of any mishap that might take place on the students' way to attend the examination", he added. "During hartal, most of the public and university transports do not ply making it difficult for the students to be present at the examination centres," said Mehdi Hasan Khan, Chairman of the department of Population Science. He suggested the university's highest body reconsider their decision regarding holding of examinations during the hartal considering the woes of the students. Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury, chairman of DU Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department said that holding examination is an administrative decision of the university's highest body and the teachers are obliged to follow their decisions. "However, I have no comments on the issue" he added. On the other hand, students who have examinations today (Sunday) raised their voices against the authority's decision to hold examinations during general strike. However, the university controller of exam's office sources informed the FE that despite countrywide dawn to dusk general strike, all semester and year final examinations of the university will be held today (Sunday) as per the schedule.
