PABNA, June 28: Majority haats and bazaars including nine pourashava markets in nine upazilas of the district are in deplorable condition causing serious inconvenience to the buyers and the sellers.
According to sources there are 195 haats and bazars in nine upazilas in the district. Of them, 29 haat in Pabna sadar upazila, 32 in Sujanagar, 30 in Santhia, 24 in Chatmohar, 19 Ishwardi, 18 in Bera, 10 in Atghoria, 10 Bhangura and 9 Faridpur upazila.
The nine upazila authorities earned revenue income Tk 82.1 million (8 crore 21 lakh 73 thousand 45) from 160 haats bazaars out of 195 haats bazaars in nine upazilas of the district in 2013-2014 fiscal.
This correspondent found maximum big haats and bazaars set up on the highway or highway sides are causing traffic jam. Ataikula haat, Tebunia haat, Chaturhat, Tebaria haat, Pushpopara, Ournkhula, Bera CNB haat, Chinakhara, Kashinathpur, Bonogram, Kazirhats areas are in poor condition although they are the sources of substantial revenue income for the local administration.
Shortage of space, lack of proper maintenance, filthy stagnant water, heaps of garbage emitting bad smell are common phenomena in the every haat and bazaar of the district. Due to shortage of sheds most of the haat traders set their commodities under the open sky for selling under the scorching heat of the sun and sometimes in rain.
A number of traders, sellers of Tebunia Bazaar, Bonogram haat, Kashinathpur and Kazirhat complained about the absence of drainage facility in the market. As a result, the situation has worsened in the rainy season. Filth and garbage are left here and there and remain for days, emitting putrid smell polluting the environment.
The narrow passages in these markets hamper easy movement of the consumers. The unplanned construction of shops and stalls reduced the space in the markets causing accommodation problem.
Acute scarcity of drinking water is also prevailing in the markets. Absence of public toilets is also posing threat to public health. There is no security guard during the haats period any haats bazaars.
