Mother of Rakib\\\'s killers remanded

A court in Khulna on Thursday placed Beauty Begum, mother of Rakib killing case prime accused Sharif and also an accused herself, on a 3-day remand. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Faruk Iqbal passed the order after a hearing on a remand petition filed on Tuesday by Khulna Sadar Police Station’s sub-inspector Kazi Mostaque Ahmed, also the investigation officer of the case. On Tuesday, the sub-inspector (SI) produced the three accused in the case – motorcycle garage owner Sharif, his brother Mintu Mia, and their mother Beauty Akhter – before the court and sought a 10-day remand against Beauty Akhter. Police will seek remand against the accused siblings as soon as their health condition improves. The two were injured in a mob beating following the death of Rakib and are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital under police custody. Earlier on August 3, minor boy Rakib, who used to work at a motorcycle repairing shop at Tutpara Central Road in Khulna city, was tortured to death allegedly by his employers over quitting job. Locals caught the two torturers – ‘Sharif Motorcycle workshop’ owner Sharif and his brother Mintu and handed them over to the police after beating them. Alam Haldar, victim’s father filed a case with the Sadar Police Station accusing the three – Sharif and Mintu, and their mother Beauty Akhter – on Tuesday. Police also arrested Beauty as she was present during the incident on the spot.
Earlier on July 8, 13-year-old boy Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon, son of Sheikh Azizur Rahman of Badeali village in Sylhet Sadar upazila, was brutally tortured to death over a flimsy excuse at Sundar Ali Market in Kumargaon area of Sylhet city, which triggered an outcry across the country, according to a news agency.
