Motivating students for world-class higher education

FE Special | Sunday, 25 May 2008

IN this global village, it has been easier for Bangladeshi students to obtain higher education from reputed foreign universities. The more academic qualification one will have, the more one is likely to succeed in life. It is time we motivated our students, especially those at university level, for obtaining world-class higher education so that they become competent for world-class job market.

In order to motivate university students motivated to obtain further education from reputed overseas students, we need to take immediate measures.

First, teachers coming back from foreign universities should share their experience more and more with the current students so that students become interested in going to those universities for further studies.

Second, the past students of the university who are currently studying or who have already completed studies in a good university need to be invited to give lectures to the current students. From these senior students of the department, current students will learn admission hurdles and processes and can be motivated to study in those overseas universities.

Third, in today's digital age, a university should maintain a good database of all the universities across the globe which will be available to the students. In this way, learners can easily learn about various universities, their admission processes, availability of scholarship etc.

Fourth, university management can also help students in processing their papers for application and other related activities.

Fifth, teachers coming back from foreign universities should share their experience with the current students in an extensive manner.

Sixth, arrangement of exchange programmes will be helpful, this will give current students ideas about overseas students and they will be more interested in studying in overseas universities.

Last but not the least, if university takes greater responsibility of students, it becomes easier for the present students to obtain further education from other world-class universities. Today a university will serve its students, tomorrow these students will serve the university by forming a strong alumni network, by donating to the university fund, also by joining the university as faculties-and in such numerous ways.
