The revenue board's month-long motivational programme for tax officials has been a success as those at the field level, who remained detached for a long period, responded positively, officials said.
The programme being carried out by the revenue board in November in the six divisional cities of the country will conclude today (Sunday) in Barisal.
The revenue board's senior officials have already attended such programmes in five other divisions aiming to change the mind-set of the taxmen.
"I will attend an opinion-exchange programme with the income tax, customs and VAT officials at Barisal Sunday. After that I will meet the chamber bodies in Barisal division," said the NBR chief Muhammad Abdul Mazid.
The NBR for the first time arranged this programme to ensure taxmen's participation in overall decision-making process, he said.
It was alleged that communication gap between the officials in the headquarters and field level officials often create misconception in delivering or implementation of the policy decision.
The NBR this year has adopted a strategy to collect tax through friendly gesture. For familiarising the strategy, the NBR has been motivating its officials first on how to approach the taxpayers.
"I have addressed the tax officials in Dhaka division today (Saturday) to motivate them on changing their mindset in revenue collection mechanisms," said NBR chief.
"The board has recorded opinions of taxmen working in different tax offices to increase revenue earning from its three wings, Income Tax, Value Added Tax (VAT) and customs," The NBR chairman said.
The NBR will take five of the best suggestions from Income Tax, Vat and Customs officials each on how to increase revenue income, strategies to find out tax evaders and reform in tax administration, he said.
The revenue board will give award to 30 taxmen, 10 each from Income Tax, VAT and Customs, by evaluating the suggestions.
The revenue board has carried out the programme under the theme 'We are members of revenue family' joining all income tax, VAT and customs officials together.
"I have also assured the field level officers to address their problems with due priority and bridge the gap," Mr Mazid said.
Most of the taxmen have focused on lack of logistic, infrastructure, transportation facilities, and unusual delay in job promotion as major obstacles to revenue collection.
