Motor vehicle tax, other fees raised by 17 to 25pc

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has raised Motor Vehicles Tax (MVT) and other fees by 17 per cent to 25 per cent, effective from July 1.

The BRTA has also increased driving licence fees by Tk 100 to Tk 250 from Tk 150. Driving licence renewal fees has been raised by Tk 50 to Tk 150 from Tk 100 if renewed within 15 days from the date of expiry and the renewal fees after 15 days has been fixed at Tk 200 instead of the previous rate of Tk 150.

"The government has increased all MVT and other fees after six years," senior official of BRTA said.

The last MVT and fees hike was in July, 2002-03 last.

As per the new MVTs, the rate for motor cycle weighing upto 90 kg has been fixed Tk 500 against Tk 400 previously and it is Tk 1,000 against Tk 800 for the one weighing more than 90 kg. If a trailer or side car is used, owner will have to pay Tk 250 in addition.

For tri-cycle propelled by mechanical power having seating capacity for not more than two passengers the tax has been increased to Tk 1,800 from Tk 1,500.

Tax for tri-cycle with seating capacity for more than two passengers has been fixed at Tk 1,800 and additional Tk 500 for every additional passenger.

For the vehicles that carry passengers (but not ply for hire) - with seating facility for not more than two passengers the tax has been increased to Tk 2,500 from Tk 2000, with seating facility for not more than three passengers to Tk 3,500 from Tk 3000, with seating facility for not more than four passengers to Tk 5000 from Tk 4500 and with seating arrangement for more than four passengers to Tk 5000 and additional Tk 500 for every additional passenger.

For vehicles carrying passengers (ply for hire) other than tri-cycles, the BRTA has increased the taxes to Tk 750 from Tk 500.

Owners of vehicles with seating arrangement for not more than four passengers will have to pay Tk 3000 instead of Tk 2500 and with seating facility for more than four passengers but not more than six passengers will have to pay Tk 3,600 instead of Tk 3000.

The taxes for vehicles having seating facility for more than six passengers but not more than 15 passengers has been fixed at Tk 6000 against the previous rate of Tk 5000, for more than 15 passengers but not more than 30 passengers at Tk 7200 against Tk 6000, for more than 30 passengers, in case of single-decker bus, at Tk 9000 against Tk 7500 and for double-decker bus and articulated bus at Tk 10,440 against Tk 8700.

BRTA has also increased taxes for vehicles used for transporting goods ranging from k 500 to Tk 2,500.

Taxes for laden vehicles (transport goods but not ply for hire) not exceeding 3500 kilograms in weight has been fixed at Tk 3500, exceeding 3500 kilograms but not exceeding 7500 kilograms in weight at Tk 3500 and additional Tk 500 tax will have to pay for every additional 500 kilograms in weight or fraction thereof.

For exceeding 7500 kilograms but not exceeding 12500 in laden weight, the tax has been fixed at Tk 7000 and additional Tk 1100 will have to pay for every additional 500 kilograms in weight or thereof.

Besides, exceeding 12500 kilograms in weight laden vehicles, owners have to pay Tk 17,500 and additional Tk 1200 will have to pay for every additional 500 kilograms in weight or fraction thereof.

Taxes for laden vehicles (transport of goods and ply for hire) - exceeding 7500 kilograms but not exceeding 12,500 kilograms in weight have been fixed at Tk 3,800 and additional Tk 500 will have to pay for every additional 500 kilograms in weight or fraction thereof. Taxes for laden vehicles (transport of goods and ply for hire) exceeding 12500 kilograms in weight have been fixed at Tk 8500 and additional Tk 500 will have TO PAY for every additional 500 kilograms in weight or fraction thereof.
