A suspected motorcycle lifter was injured in a ‘gun battle’ with police at Purbo Kuliya village at Debhata upazila in Satkhira district on Sunday. The injured was identified as Alamgir Hossain, son of Abdul Majid Sarder, a resident of Ujirpur village of the upazila. Being tipped off that a gang of criminals was preparing to commit mugging at Purbo Kuliya by placing logs on road, a police team, led by Sub Inspector Jakaria conducted a drive at the village around 3:15am, said Kamal Hossain, sub-inspector of Sadar police station. The muggers from the motorcycle opened fire and blasted crude bombs towards police as they challenged them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, leaving Alamgir injured. Later, police rescued the injured while his other associates managed to flee the scene. Two police members were also injured in the ‘shootout’. The injured were admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital. Police recovered a machete, two iron rods and a motorcycle from the scene, according to a news agency.
