Biman sealed Sunday a 'historic' agreement with American aerospace giant Boeing to buy eight new generation passenger jets as part of its fleet overhaul programme.
Officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Boeing for supply of four Boeing-777-300 ER and four Being-787-8 at a cost of US$1.26 billion.
"This is a landmark decision in the history of Biman and Bangladesh," Mahbub Jamil, special assistant to the chief adviser, said.
"It's historic as Biman is procuring new planes directly from the manufacturer and from its own resources. This MoU will pave the new way for foreign investment. It will also boost confidence of multinationals toward the country due to the direct purchase," Jamil told newsmen after the signing ceremony.
Biman's chief executive MA Momen and Boeing's director general (aircraft contracts) Glen A Green signed the MoU on behalf of their organisations.
Jamil also said Biman can negotiate with Boeing for reduction of prices before both sides enter into a final agreement by April 15.
US charge d' Affairs Geeta Pasi said: "This is a success for the government. Bangladesh's aviation industry is growing and it is an excellent opportunity to grow further."
Jamil said as per the MoU, four Boeing-777-300 ER aircraft would be added to the Biman's fleet between July and December of 2013.
The remaining four planes will be added in July, August, October and November of 2017, he added.
The civil aviation ministry chief said that the government is pledge-bound to eliminate corruption in aircraft purchase.
The deal will bring Biman's fleet size to 20 from the existing 12.
