Moudud, Fakhrul, Mahbub among 8 leaders get HC bail

The High Court (HC) Monday granted bail to eight BNP leaders, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in separate cases while the Supreme Court (SC) upheld the HC bail for two other stalwarts of the party, reports UNB.
The other BNP leaders who secured bail are its standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, vice-chairmen Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Major (retd) M Hafizuddin, BNP chairperson's adviser Khandker Mahbub Hossain, party joint secretary general Barkatullah Bulu, organising secretaries Fazlul Haque Milon and Golam Akbar Khandker.
On the other hand, the Supreme Court upheld the HC order granting bail to BNP standing committee members MK Anwar and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah to two cases.
Defence lawyers said now there is no bar to the release of Moudud, MK Anwar, Rafiqul Islam Miah and Khandker Mahbub as they have secured bail in all the cases.
Following separate bail petitions, an HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed granted bail to Moudud Ahmed and Khandker Mahbub Hossain in separate cases.
The HC granted six months' bail to Barrister Moudud Ahmed in a case filed against him for purportedly grabbing a government house in Gulshan in the capital.
On November 8 last year, plainclothes police arrested Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Raifqul Islam Miah from the city's Karwanbazar area as they came out of Hotel Sonargaon.
On December 17 last year, the ACC filed the case against Moudud and his brother Manzur Ahmed for grabbing the government house.
On January 21 last year, a Dhaka court showed Moudud arrested in the case.
Besides, the HC granted bail to Khandker Mahbub Hossain in a case filed with Ramna Police Station.
A case was filed with Ramna Police Station on March 2 last year against Khandker Mahbub Hossain on charges of vandalising vehicles, blasting cocktails and preventing police from discharging duties in Shantinagar and Malibagh areas in the city during a demonstration on the day.
On January 7, plainclothes police arrested Khandker Mahbub as soon as he came out of the Jatiya Press Club.
The same bench granted six months' bail to Khoka in six cases while Hafizuddin secured bail for six months in three cases, Bulu for eight weeks in six cases and Milon for six months in a case.
Meanwhile, the HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mohammad Ullah granted bail for eight weeks to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three cases.
Earlier Thursday, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed the HC's January 16 order that had asked the police to refrain from harassing or arresting BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir until the submission of inquiry reports in the three cases.
