A mould-making plant, set up in Gazipur, will start commercial production shortly.
The plant will produce moulds for the plastic and metal industries and is the first of its kind in the country.
The import substitute unit will be able to produce moulds worth Tk. 1.0 billion annually and save the country a substantial amount of foreign exchange spent on importing the items.
Plastic and metal product manufacturers use moulds of various sizes and shapes to produce their goods ranging from plastic water bottles to the outer casing of refrigerators and air-conditioners.
The demand for such moulds in the country is estimated to be around Tk 3.0 billion annually.
The mould making plant has been set up by Walton, a subsidiary of the RB Group at Chandra in Gazipur.
The company will produce moulds for their own use and sell the excess capacity to other local industries.
Director of the RB Group SM Shamsul Alam told the FE that the plant was expecting to go into commercial production within December 15 next.
He also said the company had already trained around 100 engineers from Japan to operate the plant.
He hinted that it might export such moulds as there exists a large demand in the neighbouring countries.
While talking to the FE, Engineer Zahirul Islam, in-charge of the plant said that the local industries would get complete moulds at cost effective prices.
"We are expecting to give local industries every kind of moulds for their production process as we have installed the most modern milling machines, leather photographs and heat treatment equipments," he added.
He also said the moulds produced in the plant will be cheaper than the imported ones and the time required for shipment would be saved.
"We are capable to produce modern style moulds for making the end-products attractive," he added.
