A local entrepreneur Saturday said it has taken a move to build multi-storeyed automated digital car parks at a cost of Tk 2.0 billion to help reduce traffic snarl-ups in the city.
This new digital parking system would automatically park and retrieve cars using lifts or elevators controlled by state-of-the-art software systems.
Everbest, a shipping company, has already submitted a proposal to the government for its nod.
Farubar Anwar, managing director of Everbest, told the FE: "Although it will require small lands to build, it will be a secured parking system."
"Basically, this is an innovative gesture and first of its kind in our country with Fork Type parking platforms."
The company has initially proposed to construct 50 car parks with an option for future expansion.
"In order to accommodate 2,000 cars and jeeps at a time in Motijheel area, it requires 50 digital car parks each to contain 40 cars," a senior official said.
Currently, 2,000 cars occupy at least 660 'Kathas' (475,200 square feet) while the same number of cars will occupy only 50 'Kathas' (36,000 square feet) of lands in the city in the new system.
The official said each park will be built on 720 square feet of lands and will accommodate 40 cars.
He also said the technology had been developed to accommodate all kinds of vehicles.
Meanwhile, company sources said, the owners of cars will be able to retrieve in an average time of 90 seconds for 40 cars. Each car park will be a 12-13-storeyed building.
They also said the parking will be of fully automatic system and password protection will eliminate manual intervention.
"It will minimise theft, vandalism and other kinds of accidental damage," a senior company official said.
