The ministry of commerce has taken a step to prepare a list of abandoned business establishments aiming to make them profitable through better management, officials said.
As part of the step, the ministry will issue letters to the deputy commissioners (DCs) in a week or two, asking them to prepare and send the lists of such estates to the ministry.
Earlier, the ministry had asked the DCs to send the lists, but they could not provide it to the ministry, an official of the ministry told the FE requesting anonymity.
Asked how many deserted business establishments belong to the ministry, the ministry official said, "We don't know the actual number. We will be able to determine the exact number after getting the lists from the DCs."
There are hundreds of such establishments have remained abandoned in different districts, the value of which is billions of taka, the official said.
If the ministry can identify the abandoned business estates and re-run those with efficient management, it will add significant contribution to the government exchequer, according to the business circle.
Such properties or business establishments were left by the entrepreneurs of the then West Pakistan, now Pakistan.
"We have had a meeting on the issue. We decided to ask the deputy commissioners (DCs) to send the lists of the abandoned business establishments to the ministry," senior secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon told the FE.
"After getting the full lists of the abandoned properties, we will decide the next course of action," he said.
