Move under way to turn TCB a limited company
Tuesday, 24 November 2009
A committee of experts is examining different aspects whether the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) could be turned into a public limited company or strengthened any other way.
Chairman of parliamentary standing committee on commerce Advocate Lutful Hai said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on 'Market Management: Role of TCB', jointly organised by Citizens' Solidarity and Bangladesh Development and Environment Forum (BDEF) at Jatiya Press Club in the city, reports BSS.
He said the government was also thinking of creating an alternative buffer stock so that no more syndication in the name of importing essential commodities was created in the country.
Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee Begum Rumana Mahmood spoke as special guest at the discussion with Professor of Dhaka University Dr ASM Tariqur Rahman in the chair.
Syed Abu Bakar Siddiqui and Anisuzzaman Rana of the BDEF, representatives from various professions, labour leaders and civil society members joined the discussion.
The TCB has to be made an organisation for the people's welfare, Advocate Lutful said and pointed out that the BNP-Jamaat government did not take any such step.
Agreeing to the fact that the market was volatile before Eid-ul-Fitr, he said the market was now stable due to the government's varied steps.
Begum Rumana said a corruption-free mindset is needed to turn the TCB into a welfare-oriented and profitable organisation.
Dr ASM Tariqur Rahman said, at the time of its inception in 1972, the TCB was a manpower-enriched and well-equipped organisation but it was unfortunate that in course of time manpower had been downsized and it gradually became all ineffective organisation.
The other speakers underscored the need for introducing rationing system to keep the prices of essentials within the reach of the common people.
