Move underway to free city from beggars

Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali said Tuesday the government is working on a plan to free Dhaka city from beggars very soon.
Speaking at an inter-ministerial meeting at his ministry, he said the government is moving ahead with a comprehensive plan to gradually free the rest of the country from beggars.
He also hinted that the government is planning to operate mobile court drives after Eid to drive away beggar from various areas in the city that include diplomatic zone and airport, Sonargaon Hotel, Ruposhi Bangla Hotel, Radisson Hotel and Bailey Road area.
The Social Welfare Minister said a list of beggars in Dhaka city and the rest of the country will be prepared under a government project. “The beggars will be rehabilitated and provided with alternative livelihoods under the project,” he added.
The government launched a pilot project in 2010 to rehabilitate the beggars. Dhaka city has been divided into several zones to conduct the rehabilitation activities under the project.
