Movement against BNP-Jamaat, CG govt first, if needed: PM

Friday, 16 April 2010

Holding the BNP-Jamaat alliance government and the subsequent caretaker government (CG) responsible for the existing power and water crisis, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Thursday said, if needed, movement for water and electricity will have to be launched against them first, reports BSS.
"Those who could not produce a single megawatt (mw) electricity and manage a single drop of safe water during their seven-year rule will have to be made accountable to the people," she said while addressing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant (phase-II).
The Prime Minister said the past Awami League government had faced similar situation after assuming power in 1996. "We were able to raise electricity production to 4,300 mw from 1,600 mw and increase supply of safe water. But why did they fail?" she questioned.
Sheikh Hasina said the crisis of power and water would not have been created today if their production had been increased keeping consistency with the demand of the people.
With LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Local Government Division Secretary Manzur Hossain, Danish Ambassador Einar H Jensen, WASA Chairman Dr Mohammad Golam Mostafa and Managing Director Taqseen A Khan.
