Movement to continue until voting rights, democracy restored: BNP

FE REPORT | Friday, 2 February 2024

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) would continue its movement until people's voting rights and democracy are restored in the country, said a member of the party chairperson's advisory council, Zainul Abedin Faruq on Thursday.
Issuing warning to the government, Zainul Abedin said, "BNP and its like-minded parties will continue movement until democracy and people's voting rights are restored."
He said that the government would not be able to suppress the ongoing movement by continued arrests and oppression on the opponents.
"You (the government) couldn't confine us (BNP) in prison and houses. We (BNP) will show you (the government) what type of movement we can launch," he said at a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club.
He alleged that the government killed opponents by using sticks and oars and held a voter less dummy election on January 7, 2024.
He said that the government is still issuing threat to the opponents as it (the government) did before the last parliamentary election.
He said that the ruling Awami League labels its opponents as collaborators whenever they criticise the government.
"Those who take stand against you (government) are being treated as your (government) enemies. You (government) claim yourselves as democratic and pro-liberation forces ...but you (government) don't act or behave like that," he maintained.
President of a faction of Gonoadhikar Parishad Nurul Huq Noor said that the government is continuously arresting opposition leaders and activists and putting them in jail and compelling them to pass their days in subhuman condition.
Jatiyatabadi Nobin Dal (JND) organised the event that also demanded immediate release of all detained BNP leaders including party chairperson Khaleda Zia, secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and others.
President of the JND Humayun Ahmed Talukder presided over the event which was also attended by BNP organising secretary Abdus Salam Azad and others.
