Sunday, 12 October 2014

A Dhaka court on Sunday sent ruling party MP Abdur Rahman Bodi to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in connection with the allegation of unusual wealth accumulation. Metropolitan magistrate Maruf Hossain passed the order when Bodi surrendered before the court and sought bail. On August 21, the ACC filed separate cases with Ramna Police Station accusing Bodi (Awami League MP from Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency) and two former state ministers – Abdul Mannan Khan and Mahbubur Rahman Talukder – of amassing wealth illegally. As per the FIR, Abdur Rahman Bodi submitted his wealth statement to the ACC on February 23 mentioning his and his family’s wealth worth about Tk 52 million. Examining his income tax return, the ACC probe found that he acquired over Tk 16.7m in last five years (2009-13) and earned illegal wealth worth nearly Tk 110m, according to UNB.
