MP Rana\\\'s name dropped from Faruk murder charge-sheet

Police have formally charged eight people in court with the murder of Tangail Awami League leader Faruk Ahmed. Names of ruling party MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana and his brother Tangail Municipality Mayor Shahidur Raman Khan Mukti were dropped. But police added the name of their another brother Sanyat Khan Bappa as the prime accused. Tangail-3 MP Rana’s younger brother Bappa is a central leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. He was also the vice-president of the immediate past central committee of the ruling party’s student wing. The other accused are Shahjahan Mia, Shafiqur Rahman, Sanjit Ghosh, Azad Fakir, ‘Sujon’, ‘Sanwar’ and ‘Roosevelt’.
The chargesheet was submitted at the Judicial Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Ashok Kumar Singha told reporters.
Singha, the case’s investigation officer, said Shahjahan, Sujon and Sanwar were in jail while the rest are on the run. Faruk Ahmed, a freedom fighter, was shot and hacked to death by assailants at Akurtakur Parha’s Battola Bazar on Jan 19, 2013.
He was a member of the ruling party’s Tangail district unit at the time. His family lodged the murder case at Tangail Model Police Station three days later without naming anyone.
His wife Nahar Ahmed later claimed the four brothers of the influential Khan family – Rana, Mukti, Bappa and Tangail Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Zahidur Rahman Khan Kakon – were behind the killing. Anisul Islam Raja and Mohammad Ali, both close to the Khan family, were arrested after the murder. They gave confessional statements in court in August last year implicating the four brothers, police said. After that, Rana and Mukti moved the High Court in a bid to secureanticipatory bail in the case. The court then ordered police not to arrest and harass them. But the Appellate Division chamber judge stayed the High Court order after several days, according to bdnews24.com.
