FE REPORT
Police blocked a long-march of the MPO-listed teachers and employees towards the Secretariat in the capital on Tuesday, as they continued their protest for the third consecutive day. Police halted the long-march near the High Court intersection at around 4:30 pm.
The MPO-affiliated teachers and employees had been demonstrating to press home their three-point demand, including raising their housing allowance to 20 per cent of the salary.
Earlier, at around 4:00 pm, Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the Alliance for Nationalisation of MPO-listed Education Institutions, announced that they had given the administration a deadline until 4:00 pm to issue a notification regarding their demands. As no such notification was issued, they decided to proceed with the long-march towards the Secretariat.
Following his announcement, the teachers and employees started their march from the Shaheed Minar towards the Secretariat via Doel Chattar. However, the procession was stopped by police at the High Court intersection.
A heavy presence of police personnel was seen in the High Court area, where two layers of barricades were set up at the intersection and in front of the Shikkha Bhaban (Education Building). Two water cannons and two armoured vehicles were also deployed in front of the building.
Meanwhile, like-minded teachers and employees across the country started a strike in their respective institutions in solidarity with the protest.
On Sunday morning, the teachers and employees started a sit-in programme in front of the National Press Club to push for their demands. At 1:30 pm, police requested them to move from the area, after which a section of the protesters decided to continue their sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar. However, another section of the protesters refused to leave and remained in front of the Press Club.
At around 1:55 pm, police again urged the teachers to vacate the road in front of the Press Club. When a section of the protesters resisted, police used sound grenades and charged batons to disperse them. Following the police action, the Alliance announced a nationwide strike at all private educational institutions from Monday.
