Detective Branch (DB) of Police on Tuesday pressed charges against Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of Awami League MP Pinu Khan, in a case filed for shooting two people to death with his firearm in the city’s New Eskaton area.
DB Sub-Inspector Depak Kumar Das, who the investigation officer of the case, submitted the chargesheet against Rony under Section 302 of penal code to the general recording officer Mahamudur Rahman around 1:25 pm.
DB Joint Commissioner Manirul Islam said there are 37 witnesses against Rony.
“Although Rony did not make any confessional statement before the court, we hope that we will be able to probe the court that he is directly involved in the killing,” he added.
However, we requested the court to make Rony’s three friends and driver Imran as eye witnesses of the case as they have already made their confessional statements, he said.
Besides, after conducting the ballistic test it was found that bullets recovered from the victims’ bodies were fired from the licensed gun of Rony.
On April 13, Rony, said to be a drug addict, allegedly opened fire on people indiscriminately near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his car, leaving two people -- rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and Janakantha’s auto-rickshaw driver Yakub --injured with bullets.
Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 15 while Yeakub died at the hospital on April 23.
On April 15, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station against unidentified people in this connection.
On June 1, law enforces arrested Rony from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with the firing.
