Work on MRT lines 01 and 05 is set to begin from next fiscal year, as the government has earmarked a substantial volume of funds in the upcoming development budget.
The government has also provided additional funds to the under-construction MRT-6 project to complete the remaining work by the next year, officials said on Saturday.
The National Economic Council (NEC), with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, has approved a Tk 2.63- trillion ADP for FY2024.
Work on MRT-01, which links Airport with Kamalapur, began months back, has got an allocation of Tk 39.11- billion allocation in the ADP for next fiscal.
The government has given the mass transport sector as the top most priority, said a Dhaka Mass Transport Company Limited (DMTCL) official.
In the Revised ADP (RADP) for the outgoing fiscal, the government allocated Tk 4.83 billion for the construction of the second MRT line in Dhaka city.
Out of Tk 39.11 billion for MRT-01, the Japanese development partner is expected to provide Tk 27.00 billion and the remaining Tk 21.11 billion by the government from public exchequer.
Work on the third line, MRT-05 (north), from Hemayetpur to Vatara through Mirpur-10, Banani and Gulshan will also begin next month, said the DMTCL official.
In the newly approved Tk 2.63-trillion ADP, the government allocated Tk 8.80 billion for building MRT-05, which is programmed for completion by 2028, according to a PC official.
Of the allocations, Tk 5.0 billion will be provided as project loan and the remaining Tk 3.80 billion will come from the government's local resources.
Meanwhile, MRT-06 has also received an allocation Tk 34.25 billion in the ADP as the DMTCL wants to complete the remaining line from Agargaon to Kamalapur within 2024.
"We've given higher allocation to the ongoing MRT-06. Similarly, MRT-01 and MRT-05 are going to get higher allocations for starting their physical construction work," said the PC official.
"Actually, we've given the highest priority to the mass transport solution programmes," he added.
Last March, the DMTCL appointed contractors under the package (CP-01) for developing the depot of MRT-01.
It has divided the entire MRT-01 work into 12 packages. The contractors for CP-09, CP-10, CP-11 and CP-12 are going to be appointed soon.
The same for other packages is under process.
Meanwhile, physical work on MRT line-05 (north) is expected to start this July for completion in 2026.
The 20-kilometre line from Hemayetpur to Vatara via Gabtoli, Mirpur and Gulshan will have a 13.5-kilometre underground section and a 6.5-kilometre elevated one.
Besides, the DMTCL has carried out a feasibility study for the fourth line, MRT-05 south, under a project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The southern line will start from Gabtoli and end at Dasherkandi via Kalyanpur, Shyamoli, Asad Gate, Russell Square, Panthapath, Karwanbazar, Hatirjheel, Rampura and Aftabnagar. It will have 15 stations.
Out of 17.3 kilometre, DMTCL officials said, 13.1 kilometre would be underground and 4.2 elevated. The deadline of the project is 2030.
