Mufti Izahar, son indicted

A Chittagong court has indicted Mufti Izaharul Islam and his son Mufti Harun Bin Izahar in a case under Acid Control Act over a bomb explosion at a madrasa in Lalkhanbazar in the port city last year. Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Mojibur Rahman issued the order on Wednesday. The court set July 15 as the next date for hearing. Earlier on June 5, the court accepted the charge-sheet in the case. As many as 34 people were made witnesses in the charge-sheet. On Oct 7 last year, an explosion ripped through the second floor of a dormitory at Jamayetul-Ulum-Al Islamia Madrasa, run by Mufti Izahar, also the chief of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote. Five students were injured -- three of whom died later while under treatment. All the accused are now in jail except Mufti Izahar. Three cases were filed over the blast – a murder case, one under Acid Control Act and another under Explosives Act. On June 11, police pressed charges against Mufti Izahar and four others in the murder case and on Feb 10 nine people including Mufti Izahar and his son were charged in the case under Explosives Act. Mufti Izahar was also indicted in a case of failing to submit his wealth statement, according to bdnews24.com.
