Monday, 12 May 2014
The trial of Mufti Izaharul Islam Chowdhury in a case over failing to submit his wealth statement has started. Judge SM Mojibur Rahman of Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, Chittagong, and Special Tribunal-1 on Monday framed charges against Mufti Izahar in the case. Lawyer Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury representing Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said the charges were framed in accordance with ACC Act 2004. The court issued a warrant of arrest in the case on April 28. The graft watchdog filed the case against Izahar on September 17 last year for not replying to a notice served on him after allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income surfaced against him. It submitted the charge sheet in the case on Apr 21. The notice was issued on July 4, 2013, but Mufti Izahar did not receive it. Later the ACC authorities pasted the notice in a Madrasa run by Mufti Izahar in Chittagong’s Lalkhan Bazar. Three people were killed in a bomb explosion in the Madrasa last year. Three cases were filed over the explosion, accusing Mufti Izahar and his son, according to bdnews24.com.
