An alleged mugger was killed during a shootout with police when a gang of miscreants was trying to snatch belongings from two traders at Sutrapur in the city early Thursday, police said.
An officer of the Sutrapur Police Station told the FE that Roman, a listed mugger in the area who used to reside at Postogola in the capital, was caught in the gunfire and died instantly during the incident.
The police officer said that a greengrocer, Babul, was returning home at Faridabad in the city along with his business partner Mamun by a rickshaw in the early hours.
When the rickshaw reached at a place adjacent to Faridabad Madrasah, three muggers intercepted the three-wheeler and demanded belongings of the traders at the point of sharp weapons. As they refused to comply, the gang started beating the traders forcing them to cry for help.
Responding to the screaming of the traders, a police van arrived and tried to catch the gang resulting in a scuffle between policemen and the muggers.
At one stage of scuffling, one of the gang men opened fire on the police team forcing them to fire back causing death of Roman on the spot. Rest of the gang managed to flee with the gun used in the firing.
