An alleged mugger was killed in a ‘shootout’ with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the city’s Khilgaon area on Friday. Two DB men were also injured in the gun battle. One pistol loaded with three bullets was recovered from the spot. Police sources said the DB had information that an organised gang of criminals commits mugging in Khilgaon Bishwa Road area regularly at midnight. Passengers, who usually get down from night coaches, especially of ‘Shohagh Paribahan’, fall prey to them. Like other days, a special DB team was patrolling the area early Friday. They challenged several young men moving suspiciously near Khilgaon Khidma Hospital around 2:45am. Sensing danger, the gangsters reportedly fired gunshots targeting the detectives. The DB personnel also retaliated with firing, triggering a brief shootout that left one of the suspected muggers, aged about 40, and two detectives injured. The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the duty doctor declared the unidentified mugger dead. The injured DB men are constables Alim and Jony Barua, according to a news agency.
