Muggers\\\' savagery
Friday, 31 October 2014
The newspaper report (29 October, 2014) of muggers snatching a bag from a young lady on a rickshaw and finally causing her death has stunned us. The three-wheeler carrying the woman was moving to its destination. Suddenly a speeding microbus slowed down beside it. From the window of the vehicle some muggers 'swooped' on the woman to snatch her bag. It was early in the morning of 28 October. The place was Sobhanbagh in the capital.
The ill-fated woman fell from the rickshaw due to the impact resulting from the sudden force created by the muggers' attempt to snatch her bag. The woman had held the strap of the bag tightly around her wrist. At one time she fell from her vehicle, with the bus speeding ahead, and dragging her along. At one moment she gave in and let go off her bag. Some passers-by came forward and while carrying her to hospital the badly bruised woman died on the way.
We find no proper words to express our anger and shock at the incident. Mugging incidents leading to fatalities have become a common affair in the capital and other cities. The frequency of this and other brutal crimes points to the extent of savagery on the part of the criminals. Where are we heading to?
