FE Report
Finance Minister A M A Muhith Monday said the government will impose transit fees on Indian goods to be transported through Bangladeshi roads. A regulation in this regard will be finalised within the next two to three months.
"The transit facility will be provided to India with transit fees or charge, as such fee is accepted and practiced internationally," Muhith told reporters after a meeting with Rajeet Mitter, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka.
Muhith said they discussed on modalities of different development projects to be financed with Indian $1.0 billion credit.
He, however, said no customs duty will be imposed on goods destined for transit, citing again the global practice.
Muhith said currently transit charge is imposed on Indian cargoes for using the country's waterways.
He said the government will develop the infrastructure of Ashuganj port at its own cost to facilitate cargo movement.
About the remarks of the opposition leader and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on transit, Muhith said, "The remarks might have been made on political ground."
The finance minister said he rather considers the remarks made by BNP senior leader M K Anwar on similar issue, who, according to Muhith, said BNP has no objection, if transit is provided to India with transit fees
